Uki Waza – Floating Technique

Uki Waza, is one of the original 40 throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the fifth group, Gokyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo, of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a side sacrifice technique, Yoko-sutemi.

Uki Waza KUZUSHI

From a right natural posture (migi shizentai), step backward with your right foot and draw out Uke’s left foot, then break his balance to his left front corner (hidari mae sumi). Uke, since his balance is threatened, advances his right foot in order to stabilize himself.

TSUKURI

At the moment Uke begins to step forward with his right foot, sacrificing your standing position, pass your left leg closely and deeply outside Uke’s right foot. Drop to the mat onto your left side.

Simultaneously you must pull your left hand (holding Uke’s sleeve) close to the left side of your body so that it describes an arc in its movement. Reinforce this action by pushing to the left – also in an arc – with your right hand at Uke’s lapel. Your hand movements should help Uke perform a ‘textbook’ shoulder roll over your outstretched left leg.

Special Note: You must strive for complete coordination of the “sacrifice” action on your part. When you simultaneously drop to the mat and follow the described action with both your hands – the most efficient use is made of the power available through your actions. The weight and momentum of your falling body lends strength to your arms if used properly.

KAKE

As you execute the throw on Uke, roll onto your left side while continuing to steer Uke through his fall. Uke falls to his migi mae sumi almost as if he were doing a forward ukemi. Uke falls forward and is not thrown to the side as in Yoko Otoshi.
