Ura Nage – Rear Throw

Ura Nage is one of the original 40 throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the fifth group, Gokyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo, of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a rear sacrifice technique, Ma-sutemi.

Ura Nage – Rear Throw In Action

KUZUSHI

From a right natural posture (migi shizentai), Uke tries a right handed waist technique against you. In order to defend your position and retain your balance, step close to Uke with your left foot while lowering your hips. You should now be in close contact with Uke’s right side.

TSUKURI

As you step in lowering yourself to retain your balance, embrace Uke’s waist from the rear with your left hand and put your right hand against Uke’s lower abdomen – just about where your foot would go for Tomoe Nage.

Note: You may also apply this technique as an attack from behind Uke, instead of from his side as just described, in which case you would embrace his waist with both your hands and the rest of the technique is exactly the same.

KAKE

Bend strongly backwards, straightening your legs until Uke’s feet are off the mat. Now throw yourself directly backwards, being sure to thrust upward strongly enough to keep Uke’s head from hitting the mat. Uke should be thrown over your left shoulder and land on the mat above that shoulder. (The entire movement is similar to lifting a sack of grain with your arms and legs and throwing it directly over your head and to the back while you are falling backwards onto the mat.) Once on the mat, Uke’s head should be in close proximity to your own.
