Itsutsu no kata consists of movements and artistically represents power of mother nature. It consists in five techniques, known only by their number.
Itsutsu no kata five series
The first Ichi – direct concentrated energy – direct push
The second Ni – deflection – avoid and use Uki otoshi
The third San – circular energy or whirlpool – using form of Yoko wakare
The fourth Shi – action and reaction – as the sea sweeps clean the shore
The fifth Go – the void – using form of Yoko wakare
Origins
It is generally believed that Jigoro Kano is a creator of this beautiful kata.
Researchers claim that Kano claimed this kata from from Tenjin Shinyō-ryū jujitsu and modified it into form that we know of today.
