Judo at the Olympics
There would never be a great thing as judo Olympics 2016 in Rio if judo did not made its first ever appearance at the Olympic games in 1964 in Tokyo. Eight years later in 1972, men judo found its way back to Olympic games never to leave again.
And it took 20 years for women’s judo to be incorporated in the Olympic program of Barcelona games in 1992. Since 1992 men and women compete in seven weight categories. There was also, a men’s category open to all weights, but this event was withdrawn after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
The new Olympic event, recently added to the programme, will feature at least 12 teams represented by three male judoka, in the -73kg, -90kg and +90kg categories, and three female judoka, in the -57kg, -70kg and +70kg categories. All the action will take place on one day, with a quarter-final repechage system in which the top four ranked teams will be seeded.
Judo Olympics 2016
2016 Olympic games were held at Rio de Janeiro from August 6 to 12 in Barra Olympic park situated in Barra da Tijuca at the Carioca Arena 2. Around 386 judoka from 134 countries competed in 14 events. Similarly enough to 2012 London format, qualifying rounds were based on the world ranking list prepared by IJF. 14 woman and 22 man in each division summing up to 252 directly qualified judoka at this competition in addition to ensuring that each NOC was subjected to a limit of one judoka per division.
Divisions
Historically there were between 8 and 4 Olympic weight classes this was changed from time to time by adding or subtracting a category or two and currently since 1996 there are seven both for male and female judoka.

Competition schedule
Competition was held at schedule of one male and one female division a day, for seven days. Starting whit men’s 60 and woman’s 48 at day one, men’s 66 kg and woman’s 52 kg and working its way from Extra Lightweight towards Heavyweight taking place last day of competition. Elimination rounds and quarterfinal matches were held in between 10:00 to 13:00 local time and repechage, semifinal, Bronze medal and Gold medal matches was conducted from 15:30 to 18:10 local time.
