Uki Goshi
Floating half-hip throw
It is one of the 40 original throws of judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. Uki goshi is also known as Jigoro Kano’s favorite throw. Kano often displayed it as his “weapon of choice” as it is easily used against much heavier opponents. It was heavily drilled in the past in judo dojos. Classified as nage waza and sub classified as koshi waza it is demonstrated in Nage no Kata.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION
Uki Goshi (floating half-hip throw), is a hip technique. To execute floating half-hip throw, tori (the person throwing) pulls the uke (person being thrown) up and forward, making a kuzushi (balance break), places arm around uke’s back, and pulls uke’s arm around. Tori than twists uke isung lower back and hips as a pivot point.Tori’s leading leg than slightly blocks uke’s leading leg. Tori is initially slightly sideways compared to uke. This technique requires higher skill level than O goshi but it can be used against heavier opponents.
